5 Reasons to Ditch the Car for Your Next UK Adventure
If you’ve ever spent a Saturday stuck in traffic on the M25 or spent 45 minutes circling a car park in a busy coastal town, you know that road trips aren’t always the dream they’re made out to be. After 4 years of living in the UK and exploring every weekend, I’ve found a way to skip the stress entirely. Here is why I’m ditching the car and why the train always wins.
1. Scenic Views You Don’t Get on the Road
On a UK train, the landscape isn’t just something you pass through—it’s the main event. While motorways are often hidden behind grey sound barriers, rail tracks cut through the very heart of the countryside.
Some of my favorite views have been completely inaccessible by car:
- The Coastal Magic: I remember a journey near Hull where the train passed so close to the Humber Estuary; it felt as though we were gliding directly over the sea.
- The Scottish Highlands: Watching the mist roll over the rugged hills and deep lochs (lakes) from a train window is an experience no highway can match. If you’re planning a trip there, check out my 1-week scenic Scotland itinerary, which is designed entirely for travel by public transport!
- Local Gems: Even on my regular route from Newbury to Bath, I always look out for the beautiful stretch of the Kennet & Avon Canal near Bradford-on-Avon. You get to see the colorful canal boats and peaceful water in a way that’s impossible from the main road.
Unlike driving, where your eyes must stay glued to the traffic, the train allows you to actually gaze at the world unfolding outside. Plus, many UK stations are historic landmarks themselves, offering a much more charming start to your trip than a bland motorway service station.
2. Stress-Free and Relaxing
Let’s be honest: driving in the UK can be exhausting. Navigating complex roundabouts, sitting in motorway traffic, and the constant hunt for an expensive parking spot can turn a fun day trip into a tiring chore. Personally, I also struggle with motion sickness on long drives, which often leaves me feeling drained before the adventure even begins.
Train journeys, by contrast, turn “travel time” into “me time.” Here is why they are so much more relaxing:
- No Navigation Stress: You don’t have to worry about GPS signal or missing a turn. You can just sit back and let the driver handle the route. We put this into practice on our trip to Ullswater from Windermere, where the 508 bus allowed us to see the stunning Kirkstone Pass without the stress of driving the narrow ridges.
- Freedom to Move: Unlike being strapped into a car seat, you can get up, walk to the buffet car for a tea, or use the restroom whenever you need to—no “pit stops” required.
- Quality Time: I can finally catch up on a book (my second favorite activity!), have a proper conversation with Keer, or even get some work done.
On the train, the holiday starts the moment you find your seat, not just when you reach your destination. It’s travel at a pace that actually feels like a break.
3. Eco-Friendly and Budget-Conscious
Rail travel is one of the most sustainable ways to explore the UK. But it’s also smart for your wallet. While train tickets cost money, they don’t come with the hidden expenses of driving—insurance, parking fees, or petrol.
Top Budget Tips:
- Travel as a Pair: If there are two of you, the Two Together Railcard is the best investment. It gives you a flat 1/3 off your fares, and it paid for itself in just two trips for us!
- Short vs. Long Distance: For nearby trips (like Newbury to Reading), I buy on the day to avoid online booking fees. For long-distance travel, I recommend booking 3-4 months in advance for the best “Advance” prices.
- Compare Apps: Don’t just stick to one. I always compare Trip.com and Trainline before hitting buy.
4. It Keeps You Active (and Your Camera Ready!)
One of the most unexpected benefits of rail travel is how naturally it adds to your daily step count. When you drive, you often go from “couch to car to car park,” barely moving your legs until you reach your destination.
With train travel, the exploration starts the moment you leave your front door:
- The “Bonus” Steps: Walking to and from stations often adds an extra 3,000–5,000 steps to my day. It’s a brilliant way to stay active without even trying!
- Exploring the “In-Between”: Instead of seeing a motorway service station, you get to walk through scenic streets, past local bakeries, and through historic squares.
- The Photographer’s Advantage: Being on foot means I can stop instantly to snap a photo of a beautiful doorway, a blooming garden, or a historic street sign. It’s the ultimate “slow travel” perk—you can’t capture those tiny, charming details when you’re driving past at 60mph!
By the time I get home, I feel energized from the fresh air and the movement, rather than stiff from sitting in a car seat all day.
5. The Joy of Planning
Some travellers find public transport schedules stressful, but I’ve found that the planning phase is where the excitement truly begins. Unlike a car journey where you just “plug and play” into a GPS, mapping out a train trip makes the journey feel intentional and special.
My Secret Planning Ritual:
- Mapping the Route: I love checking train times and connecting routes. It feels like solving a puzzle to find the most scenic way to get from A to B.
- The Right Tools: To make this process smooth and stress-free, I rely on a few specific tools. I’ve actually put together a list of the 15 essential travel apps that I use for every adventure—they are lifesavers for checking live schedules and platform numbers!
- Discovery: While looking at the stops along the way, I often discover “hidden gem” towns I never would have known existed if I were just driving past them on a highway.
For me, the holiday doesn’t start at the destination—it starts with a cup of tea, my favourite apps, and a train schedule!
Wrap-Up: Why Trains Win in the UK
Why the Train Always Wins While road trips have their own charm, ditching the car has completely changed how I experience the UK. It has turned my travel time from a “stressful commute” into a relaxing, active, and creative part of my adventure.
Between the savings with a Two Together Railcard, the extra steps, and the ability to truly gaze at the scenery, there is simply no comparison for me.
