The Perfect Winter Day Trip to Bristol
What’s better than a winter day filled with scenic views, cosy markets, and historic charm? Bristol, with its stunning suspension bridge, lively streets, and heart-warming treats, offers the perfect escape for those seeking a mix of adventure and relaxation. Here’s how we spent one unforgettable winter day in this vibrant city.
After a long week of work, we decided it was time to unwind with a much-needed day trip to Bristol. The crisp, cold winter morning greeted us with clear skies and bright sunshine, making it the perfect day for an adventure. We started with a hearty breakfast of hot dosas, thin and crispy South Indian pancakes made from fermented rice and lentil batter. Feeling satisfied and energized, we gathered our things and eagerly stepped into the crisp winter air, excited to start our adventure. After a brisk 20-minute walk, we arrived at the station, eager to catch the train and start our journey to Bristol.

The Train Journey to Bristol
Our journey began in Newbury, with Bristol approximately an hour and a half away by train. The trip included a transfer at Westbury, where we would switch trains for the final leg of the journey. The transfer at Westbury is usually short, with only five minutes to switch platforms, so we often find ourselves rushing from platform 2 to platform 1 to make the connection. On some occasions, delays meant missing the train entirely and having to wait for the next one. However, today was different. Our train from Newbury to Westbury was perfectly on time, and the second train from Westbury to Bristol was delayed by 10 minutes, giving us plenty of time to switch platforms at a relaxed pace.
The train journey to Bristol is truly picturesque. The route winds through grasslands, farmlands, and rolling hills, offering scenic views of the countryside. Be sure to keep an eye out for the River Avon, particularly near Bradford-on-Avon, where the landscape is especially breath-taking. As the train approaches Bath, you’ll catch glimpses of beautiful mansions and castle-like buildings—an enticing preview of this historic town. If you have another day to spare, consider making the Cotswolds your next day trip — our 1-day itinerary will guide you through some of its most charming villages.

Strolling Through St. Nicholas Market
After arriving in Bristol, our first stop was the bustling St. Nicholas Market. Located in the heart of the city, this vibrant market is a treasure trove of unique finds. From quirky souvenirs to beautiful handmade gifts, it’s the perfect place to pick up something special for loved ones or to decorate your home.
We paused for lunch at a food stall in the market and enjoyed a simple yet delicious meal of avocado on sourdough toast, accompanied by a hot lentil soup with bread. Feeling refreshed, we continued exploring the market before heading to the city centre to catch bus number 8 to Clifton Observatory.

The Breath-taking Views from Clifton Observatory
A short bus ride brought us to Clifton Village, where we began the walk up to the Clifton Observatory. The views from the cliff edge were absolutely spectacular. The iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge stretched across the deep Avon Gorge, with the River Avon winding gracefully far below. Beyond the gorge, grasslands stretched out into the horizon, completing the picture-perfect scenery.
We treated ourselves to a flat white and a hot chocolate at a charming café just behind the observatory. The warmth of the drinks was a welcome contrast to the chilly winter air. While we didn’t enter the observatory itself, the views from the cliff edge were more than enough to leave us awestruck.

Crossing the Clifton Suspension Bridge
Next, we made our way to the Clifton Suspension Bridge, a true marvel of engineering. Designed by the renowned Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed in 1864, this iconic structure has withstood the test of time. Walking across the bridge, we admired its intricate design and the stunning panoramic views it offered. The gorge below appeared impossibly deep, and the sight of the River Avon winding through it only added to the bridge’s grandeur. We couldn’t help but think about how a bridge can bring so much beauty to a city, and in this case, the Clifton Suspension Bridge undeniably enhances the charm and allure of Bristol.
After crossing the bridge, we explored a lower vantage point to enjoy one last view. Though some trees partially obstructed the view, it remained a peaceful spot to pause and take in the beauty of the bridge and its surrounding landscape.

A Walk Back Through Bristol
From Clifton, we began our 40-minute walk back to the station. The route was filled with delightful surprises. We passed grand stone-brick buildings, their majesty adding a timeless elegance to the city. Along the way, we stumbled upon a striking circular white building, descended a steep hill, and wandered through broad streets and lively squares.
We also discovered a lovely Christmas market in Millennium Square, alive with festive cheer. The twinkling lights, colourful stalls, and joyful atmosphere made the evening even more memorable. Crossing a couple of illuminated bridges, we were treated to stunning night views of the city, with its reflections shimmering in the water. If you enjoy festive markets, don’t miss the Christmas market we visited in Oxford — it’s another magical spot to soak up holiday spirit.
Once we reached the train station, we grabbed a couple of vegan spicy chickpea rolls from a stall in the station’s subway. The rolls were delicious and gave us the perfect burst of energy to round off our trip.
